Lifeguard Hiring Tips:

KNOW THEIR CERTIFICATIONS: Certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR, and First-Aid are good, but those certifications alone can be easily achieved, and rarely practiced. Look for lifeguards with certifications beyond the basic requirements, such as those trained in Public Safety First-Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens. Make sure that all certifications are current, and that individuals are regularly trained and tested. A Lifeguard certification may be valid even if the individual hasn't had training in up to 3 years!

CHECK THEIR EQUIPMENT: Unless you plan to buy Rescue Tubes, CPR masks, one-way valves, latex gloves, and other equipment, you may want to consider a lifeguarding company. Most lifeguards do not own their own equipment, but rely on what is available where they work. Event lifeguard companies will issue and regularly inspect the equipment, saving you the hastle.

DON'T SKIMP: Remember, we're talking about safety. While you may pay a company slightly more than an idividual, the extra peace of mind is usually worth it. Individuals have no real commitment to you, and if they don't show, you're out of luck. Stick with a company that has done background checks and has other guards on standby in case someone bails.
